Recommended Linux Distributions
There are lots of different organisations producing different versions of Linux. Each version is called a distribution. Here are our favourites that we think you will like.
Ubuntu is widely recognised and well respected. It has a very active community and is recommended for beginners.
Kubuntu is Ubuntu but with a different interface called KDE which many people prefer.
Xubuntu is Ubuntu but for people with older computers. It has programs designed to run on slower processors.
Mandriva comes from our France and is another good beginners distribution.
Damn Small Linux is small but perfectly formed. For people with slow download connections or older computers.
There are of course many other versions of Linux however the above all offer the Live CD option. Once Linux is installed on the Hard Drive of your computer it is much faster of course. Most distributions are downloaded as .iso files - these can be burnt using most CD burning programs in Windows.
